What are grounding exercises?
Grounding exercises can help you stay in the present, or return to it when you are dissociated. You do this by consciously focusing your attention on something in the present moment, such as your breathing or a scent you smell. Connecting with your body and your senses helps you to ground yourself.
Below you will find several physical, mental, and creative grounding exercises to try out.
Physical grounding exercises
- Deep breathing: Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Breathe in deeply through your nose, hold it for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Focus on your breathing and feel your belly go up and down. Try to hold this for a few minutes, or as long as feels comfortable.
- Bodyscan: Sit or lie down and close your eyes if you like. Start by becoming aware of your toes and work your way slowly up to your head. Note how each part of your body feels and consciously relax as you go up.
- Grounding exercise: sPlace your feet firmly on the ground. Feel the weight of your body on your feet. Visualize roots growing from your feet into the earth, which will anchor you firmly.
- Sensory perception: If necessary, close your eyes and focus on your senses. Listen to the sounds around you, feel the texture of objects, notice smells, look at something you find beautiful, or go taste something with a strong flavor.
- Knee exercise: kPlace the needle firmly in a stress ball or hold it in your hands a few times. This can help you become aware of your body and release tension.
- Yoga or Tai Chi: These movement methods combine breathing, body awareness, and movement to help you ground and relax.
- Nature walk: Go for a walk in nature and try to be aware of your surroundings. Feel the ground beneath your feet, listen to the sounds of nature, and breathe in the fresh air.
