DSM criteria for PTSD

PTSD was first included as a psychological disorder in the DSM in 1980. The DSM criteria have been slightly adjusted over the years.

Who develops PTSD?

Approximately 80% of the Dutch population experiences at least one traumatic event during their lifetime. About 9% of them develop PTSD.

Misunderstandings about PTSD

There are several misunderstandings about PTSD. For example, it is sometimes thought that trauma is the same as PTSD.

Treatment of complex PTSD (CPTSD) is often an intensive process. Various forms of trauma therapy can be valuable.

PTSD treatment focuses on reducing PTSD symptoms such as flashbacks, tension, and avoidance.

PTSD symptoms

Perhaps you recognize it: you suffer from flashbacks or nightmares, a feeling of restlessness, and a constant sense of impending danger. These are common symptoms of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).
