How do I deal with a lack of understanding from family or friends?

Home » FAQ » How do I deal with a lack of understanding from family or friends?

Not everyone understands what trauma does to you. Sometimes people respond by downplaying your symptoms (“Ah, it’s been so long now”), or they avoid the topic altogether. It can also happen that people don't believe you or even blame you for what has happened. This is also called victim blaming Such reactions can be extremely painful, sometimes even more so than the event itself.

Important to know: this says nothing about the truth of your story. It says something about the other person and their inability, ignorance, or fear. Sometimes it takes time for someone to process what you have told them. A first reaction can be distant or incredulous, while later, with more calm, space still opens up for conversation and understanding.

It can help to have someone read or watch something about trauma so they can better understand what’s happening. But you don’t have to convince anyone. You have the right to set boundaries and focus your energy primarily on the people who are willing to listen and be there for you. Your experiences are real, and they deserve to be taken seriously – even if others can’t (yet).
