How do I prevent our lives from revolving entirely around the trauma?

Home » FAQ » How do I prevent our lives from revolving entirely around the trauma?

The impact of trauma can be great and strongly influence daily life. Sometimes your loved one's symptoms are so overwhelming that they largely dictate life. That is heavy, for both of you. It is good to know that this does not always have to stay this way. With appropriate support and professional help, such as trauma therapy, symptoms can often decrease and more and more space is created around the trauma.

Recovery therefore requires attention and time; at the same time, it is also very important that there remains room for other things: for you, for the two of you together, and for ordinary daily activities. Therefore, consciously continue to give attention to what gives you energy, such as contact with friends, sports, or hobbies. That does not mean you are ignoring the burden of your loved one or running away from it. It can sometimes be good to explicitly state this as well, because the feeling of being abandoned can easily be triggered unconsciously. By pausing to reflect on this together and sharing your needs in a timely manner, you prevent many misunderstandings.

In addition, it can be valuable to consciously create moments together where trauma is not the central focus, without ignoring the burden. This can be small and simple: cooking together, playing a game, taking a walk, or paying attention to a shared interest. Moments that provide some air and lightness help maintain balance and also support the recovery process.
